Politicians, family, invited guests, and members of the public gathered on the Waterford Green in Miramichi on 14 August to recognise the legacies of former premiers Lemuel Tweedie and Frank McKenna. During the ceremony, a biographical panel of each premier was unveiled. This was a collaborative effort between the Provincial Capital Commission and the City of Miramichi.
“We are pleased to have partnered with the city of Miramichi to recognize premiers McKenna's and Tweedie’s contributions to the province,” Lee Ellen Pottie, executive director of the Provincial Capital Commission. “The panels give only a snapshot of their lives. The Commission hopes that these examples will encourage young people to be more engaged in the political process and to learn more about our province’s rich history.”
The unveiling is a part of the Promenade of Premiers project, an initiative of the New Brunswick Provincial Capital Commission. The capital commission is undertaking a promenade across the province, unveiling the biographical panels of past New Brunswick premiers while celebrating their legacies.
Among the speakers at the event were Premier David Alward, Miramichi-Bay du Vin MLA Bill Fraser, Mayor of Miramichi Gerry Cormier. Former premier Frank McKenna, who spoke of former premier Tweedie’s legacy to the province, was pleased with the honour and shared some old campaign stories with the crowd.
This current unveiling in Miramichi is the sixth ceremony. As of today, fifteen biographical panels have been unveiled in Hartland, Saint-Antoine, Bathurst, Saint John and Fredericton.
The Capital Commission celebrates pride in the province and connects New Brunswickers to the capital and connects the capital to New Brunswickers.
