About

What is a capital commission?

Although the mandate may vary from one capital commission to the next, at its root, a capital commission is an organisation that connects the capital region to all residents of the jurisdiction and connects the residents to the capital region. This can be achieved in a variety of ways, such as by celebrating pride, celebrating our collective heritage and history, maintaining and ameliorating the landscape of the capital region, restoring and maintaining historic buildings or buildings of importance, and educating students about the capital.

What is a capital and capital region?

At its foundation, a capital is a city that is the official seat of government for a political entity, but this is not all. A capital reflects the history, the aspirations and the democratic traditions of all the citizens of its constituency. A capital is a place for celebration and ceremony and a place to enact the rituals that reinforce the way of government and the way of life in a province, territory, state, or nation.

A provincial capital region must be welcoming and inclusive, and must provide a sense of ownership and belonging to every citizen of the province. Our provincial capital region is a place to showcase the important symbols of our collective past through museums, galleries, historic sites, heritage buildings, and commemorative monuments. Our provincial capital region is a place to celebrate the present and to envision and pursue the future. It should be the centre of achievement in all areas of its citizens’ endeavours, including the arts, learning, justice, technology, governance, and athletics.

New Brunswick’s capital region should express the best aspirations of all New Brunswickers in all their diversity.
